This past week we had the privilege of visiting a very special place in India. It was our first time traveling to India and we could think of no better place to start our visit than at the SOS Children's Villages location in Hyderabad. It is a place unlike any we've ever seen before.
The mission of SOS Children's Villages is two-fold. First of all, they want to strengthen existing families who are suffering from a lack of funds. Their second objective—and probably the most important thing they do—is to provide a secure and loving place to live for children who have been abandoned, and to prepare them to be happy and productive adults. The thing that makes this place so different from an orphanage is that the children are placed in a "family." Each child is placed in the care of a "mother." This mother is a woman who does not have a family of her own and has dedicated her life to loving and caring for her SOS children. Most mothers in the village care for about 8–10 children.
The children learn to love and care for their siblings and work together as a family. They grow a garden and go to school. The school provides an academic education as well as skills training in subjects such as music and computers. Each house is part of a beautiful village, which consists of a common area where they have prayer and community activities. We were touched by the love and happiness we felt from these children and the dedication of the mothers was humbling. In her lifetime, one mother will raise about 25 children.
We were also touched to see that one of the buildings has a plaque on it dedicated to Foundation 4Life®. They are so grateful for the generous contributions made possible by wonderful 4Life distributors. Once again, our hearts swelled with gratitude for the vision and love of our distributors all over the world. Your selfless examples are lighting the way for so many people who watch what you do. There is truly no limit to what we can accomplish when we focus on Together, Building People through science, success, and service!
